Event Provides Safety Background For Companions - By Tim Hennagir
The Minnesota Chapter of the 99s Organization for Women Pilots hosted a "Pinch Hitter" Companion Flyer Course at the Anoka County-Blaine Airport on Feb. 19. Written by CFII Cheryl Ann Daml, the course was geared toward single-engine, piston airplanes with an electrical system and steam gauges rather than technologically advanced aircraft. VFR conditions were addressed during the half-day session. More than 30 people attended the course, which ran from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with breaks every 45 to 60 minutes. EAA Chapter 237 provided meeting space for the event. Aviation topics included airplane flight controls, forces of flight, instruments, basic radio protocol, charts and navigation, weather, flight safety, and helpful emergency tips for flying companions.
Fees from the course were donated to the Minnesota 99's scholarship fund.
The course was designed to set the stage for what pilots can teach their companions when they get back to their own airplanes.
Fees collected from the course were donated to the Minnesota Chapter 99's scholarship fund to help support flight training for current and aspiring women pilots.
