Four Boy Scout troops from Farmington, Delana, Buffalo and Kimball were at Buffalo Municipal Airport on Saturday to earn their aviation merit badges. They also were able to meet a lot of aviators as the Minnesota Pilots Association was holding their Great Minnesota Aviation Gathering the same day at the airport. More photos inside.... Full story

  • GMAG 2019 Another Success

    Randle Corfman|May 1, 2019

We are just coming off of another successful Great Minnesota Aviation Gathering, and we think that our event serves as an opportunity to oil the rusty spots of our flying skills. Let’s face it, for me to get the plane out of the barn when it is cold and snowy takes a substantial reason for doing so. The older I get the greater the inertia that I must overcome to take to the air. The GMAG is a time for renewing many friendships with those who share the flying bug…who enjoy the thrill of tak... Full story

  • From the Archives - December 1971

    Sherry Booen|May 1, 2019

How do you say goodbye to an airplane? Not just any airplane, but a silver winged giant that has been a part of your life for the last 12 years. Not the prettiest flying machine in the world, but her big four bladed props have wormed their way into your heart, as she flew with you and your buddies of the Air National Guard to the four corners of the world, without so much as damaging a little pinky. Fifteen million miles she has traveled, her hold filled with ammunition for the gallant men of... Full story

  • ICE REPORT

Mark Lee Priglmeier, Create Lift Aviation|May 1, 2019

Thanks to all who joined us for ICEPORT 2019. I trust everyone had a spectacular time. I would especially like to thank Mac's Twin Bay for doing such a fantastic job plowing us a beautiful "iceway" and parking area. And wow! A HUGE applause goes out to the fine staff at Da Boathouse restaurant. What a great breakfast buffet! People really loved the dining area...especially the after-dining experience in the adjoining bar. Doug Evink (Tanis Aircraft), you have been such a great supporter from... Full story

  • A memorable cross country

    Carl Tetzloff|May 1, 2019

To paraphrase the title of a long-standing monthly feature in Flying Magazine: From this I learned more about flying. It was May 1990. My instrument ticket, gained in a concentrated 2-week effort at Lunken field, Cincinnati, was 5 months old. I had logged fewer than 200 hours. Anxious to build time and experience, some serious cross-country work seemed appropriate. Our son lives in Albuquerque, NM. Why not plan a cross-country to visit him? That’s what airplanes are for-to cover long distances in comfort and faster than possible in a car. S... Full story

  • A GREAT Minnesota Aviation Gathering

    Tim Franklin|May 1, 2019

The Minnesota Pilots Association met on Friday and Saturday, April 26-26, at a new location this year, Buffalo Municipal Airport west of the Twin Cities for their Great Minnesota Aviation Gathering (CMAG) in which there were seminars, meetings, and vendors in which they could meet in person. This new place was welcomed by both the pilots attending, and the city of Buffalo. We will be publishing these photos and also some more next month.... Full story

George Felix, FAASTeam Safety Rep., CFI|May 1, 2019

Listening to a favorite Podcast recently has brought Carbon Monoxide to the front of my concerns so much so that a portable industrial CO detector was purchased and put into use. Please check out Aviation News Talk episode 90 which discussed the Mooney accident where the pilot passed out from CO poisoning only to wake up after the plane had landed itself in a field. The pilot is interviewed and gives great insight into his experience. Next listen to episode 102 where two General Aviation pilots report their personal experiences with the CO dete... Full story

The days are getting longer. The temperatures edging upward along with the cumulus build ups. It will soon be summer flying time! But before you start buzzing off to all those great pancake breakfast fly-ins you should be adding one more item to your I'M SAFE checklist-sun safety. All that time out on the tarmac and around the FBO adds up. If you're flying open cockpit, that can drastically increase UV ray exposure. UV or ultraviolet rays are high frequency light waves invisible to the human eye... Full story

  • Airport of the Month

    Tom Foster|May 1, 2019

Once upon a time pilots training for their instrument ratings regularly practiced approaches at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It's true, that really happened. MSP had the only Instrument Landing System (ILS) facilities in the Twin Cities, so that's where instructors took their students. Until the 1970s there was even a flight school at MSP specializing in instrument training. Some of the approaches were the notorious "back course ILS" which use the localizer transmitter for the... Full story

  • The Mystery Airplane

    Tom Lymburn|May 1, 2019

The Army was impressed by the Luftwaffe's use DFS 230 assault gliders on 10 May 1940, in the surprise capture of Belgium's Fort Eben-Emael and a bridge over the Albert Canal. As a result, it ordered the Frankfort TG-1, Schweizer TG-2 and TG-3, and the Laister-Kauffmann TG-4 training gliders in April 1941. While these civilian designs were suitable for training, they did not replicate the flight characteristics of the large WACO CG-4A combat gliders. The surviving trainers were declared surplus b... Full story
